The short answer
For a 1080p panel, a well-cooled RTX 4060 is enough and the RTX 4070 is overkill. For a QHD (2560 x 1600) panel, ray tracing, or simply future-proofing, the RTX 4070 is worth the roughly £400 jump. In our tests the 140 W RTX 4070 in the ASUS ROG Strix G16 averaged 118 fps at 1080p high, against 96 fps for the 115 W RTX 4060 in the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16, a real-world gain of about 23%. That gap widens at higher resolutions and with ray tracing on, where the 4070's extra cores and memory bandwidth count for more.
The measured numbers
Here is what we recorded across our standard 1080p high test suite, the same scenes on each machine:
- RTX 4070 (140 W), ASUS ROG Strix G16: 118 fps average, 71 fps at native QHD+.
- RTX 4070 (140 W), Lenovo Legion Pro 5: 112 fps average, 68 fps at native WQXGA.
- RTX 4060 (115 W), Acer Predator Helios Neo 16: 96 fps average at 1080p high.
- RTX 4060 (90 W), HP Omen Transcend 14: 81 fps average at 1080p high.
Two things jump out. First, the RTX 4070 is around 20 to 23% faster than the best RTX 4060 on test, a meaningful but not transformative gap at 1080p. Second, and more importantly, the two RTX 4060 machines differ by 15 fps from each other despite carrying the same GPU, which brings us to the spec that matters most.
Why TGP matters more than the model number
A laptop GPU's Total Graphics Power, or TGP, is the wattage the manufacturer allows it to draw, and it can vary by 50% or more between machines using the same chip. NVIDIA's own published laptop GPU guidance confirms that performance scales with the power and thermal design the maker chooses, and our bench proves it: the 115 W RTX 4060 in the Acer averaged 96 fps, while the 90 W RTX 4060 in the HP Omen Transcend 14 managed only 81 fps, a 15 fps gap from wattage alone. In some cases a high-TGP RTX 4060 can match or even beat a low-TGP RTX 4070. So the model number on the box is only half the story. Always find the TGP, usually buried in the detailed specs, before you compare two laptops. Which should you buy?
Buy an RTX 4060 if you game mainly at 1080p, want the best value, and do not need maximum ray tracing. A well-fed 115 W version like the Acer's drives a 165 Hz 1080p panel comfortably at 96 fps and costs noticeably less. Buy an RTX 4070 if you want a QHD panel, plan to use ray tracing, value future-proofing, or simply want the extra headroom.
