How we test gaming laptops

Every ranking on RigVerdict comes from the same hands-on process: real laptops, the same benchmarks and measurements on each one, and the criteria that actually decide how a machine performs and feels day to day. Here is exactly how we reach our verdicts.

We benchmark every laptop ourselves

We do not score laptops from a spec sheet. We buy or borrow each machine that makes our shortlist and put it through the same bench process, on the same desk, in a room held at a stable 21 C with the laptop on a hard, flat surface so airflow is never blocked. Crucially, we update each machine to the latest stable GPU driver and firmware, set it to its highest performance profile for benchmarks, and let it idle to a steady temperature before every run, so the figures are repeatable rather than a lucky first result. A laptop that posts a big opening number then throttles, or one that screams under load, has nowhere to hide once it has spent a week on our bench. Every laptop is judged the same way, which is the only way a comparison is fair.

The measurements we take

To keep our comparisons fair and repeatable, we record the same set of measurements on every laptop:

  • Average frame rate, 1080p high. We run a fixed suite of games at 1920 x 1080 on high settings and log the average frame rate of each, then take the suite average. We use the same scenes every time, captured with a frame-time monitor, because a built-in benchmark and real gameplay can differ. In our latest test the figures ranged from 72 fps on the MSI Katana 15 to 142 fps on the Razer Blade 16. We also note the native-resolution figure for laptops with QHD or 4K panels.
  • GPU power limit (TGP). We record the actual sustained GPU wattage each laptop runs, because the manufacturer's chosen power limit can swing performance by 50% or more between machines with the same GPU. This is the most overlooked spec in the category, so we quote it in every review. On test, RTX 4060 machines ranged from 90 W to 115 W, and the difference showed up as 15 fps on the bench.
  • Sustained thermals, one-hour load. We run a demanding game for a full hour and log the steady-state GPU and CPU temperatures with hardware monitoring, in the spirit of recognised endurance testing under thermal-stress standards such as IEC 60068, rather than reporting a marketing-friendly thirty-second peak. We also watch for any frame-rate decline, which reveals throttling. Our best performers held their GPUs at 72 to 75 C with no decline; weaker cooling shows up as falling frames.
  • Fan noise, at ear height. We measure fan noise with a sound-level meter positioned where your head would be, on both the loud and balanced profiles, in a quiet room. This matters because a laptop you can hear over your game or a video call is one you will resent. Our last group ranged from a composed 44 dB(A) on the HP Omen Transcend 14 to an intrusive 52 dB(A) on the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16.
  • Battery life, light mixed use. We run a standardised light workload (web, video and office work at a fixed 150-nit screen brightness) and time how long the battery lasts, because no gaming laptop lasts long while actually gaming. We report that figure plainly. Our last group ranged from 4 h 30 m on the small-battery MSI Katana 15 to 7 h 40 m on the efficient HP Omen Transcend 14.
  • Display and surface temperatures. We measure screen brightness and colour-gamut coverage with a colorimeter, and we log the surface temperature at the keyboard centre and the WASD keys with a probe, because a laptop that cooks your hands is unpleasant to play. Brightness on test ranged from a dim 286 nits to a bright 532 nits, and panel coverage from 88% to 100% DCI-P3.

How we turn measurements into scores

Each laptop is scored on three axes, each from 1 to 5: performance (the measured frame rate and how well it sustains under load), cooling (the thermals, the noise and the surface temperatures) and display (resolution, refresh rate, brightness and colour coverage). Those three scores, weighed against the price, feed the overall rating you see on each review. Crucially, a high score is not about being the most expensive or the fastest laptop; it is about being the best machine for the buyer it is aimed at. An £899 budget laptop can score well for a student on a tight budget, and a £2,999 flagship can lose marks for being overkill for most people. We always say who a laptop isn't for, not just who it is.

How we use manufacturer specifications

Specifications are a starting point, not the verdict. A spec sheet tells us the GPU model, the resolution, the RAM and the weight, all genuinely useful. But it rarely tells us the GPU's power limit, how well the laptop sustains performance under a real load, how loud the fans get, or how bright the screen actually is. So we treat the spec sheet as a hypothesis to test rather than a result to report. Where a laptop lives up to its specification, we say so; where it throttles, runs louder or measures dimmer in practice than the numbers suggest, that gap is exactly what our hands-on testing exists to catch. The rating you read reflects what the laptop actually does on the bench, not what the box promises. We also cross-check our findings against manufacturer published specifications and NVIDIA's laptop GPU guidance, so our numbers sit in a credible context.

The role of owner reviews

We read widely around each laptop, including the experiences of ordinary owners, because some things only surface over months: a hinge that loosens, a fan that develops a rattle, a battery that degrades, a driver issue that takes a year to fix. A pattern of owners reporting the same fault tells us something a fortnight of testing cannot. We weigh that alongside our own measurements rather than instead of them: a flood of five-star reviews does not earn a laptop a place on its own, and a handful of one-star complaints does not automatically disqualify one. The aim is a rounded picture, our bench data informed by the lived experience of people who have used these machines for years.

Our independence

We are not paid by manufacturers to feature or favour their laptops, and no brand can buy a place or a higher position in our rankings. The order is decided entirely by how the laptops perform against our criteria. The gaming-laptop market moves fast as new GPUs arrive, models are revised or discontinued, and prices shift. We review our rankings regularly, update prices and availability, and swap in newer machines where they earn a place. If a laptop we recommend is discontinued, we say so and point you to the closest current alternative. We would rather show a shorter list of laptops we genuinely stand behind than pad the page, so a model only stays on our list as long as it remains the best choice for its buyer.
